The Wisdom of Wabi-Sabi (侘び寂び) is a traditional Japanese philosophy of aesthetics and principles applied primarily in art, architecture, and design that focuses on attaining the harmony between Beauty & Imperfection in An Appreciation of Natural Simplicity.
The Wisdom of Wabi-Sabi is in understanding that Nothing is Perfect.
And that includes people. You. Me. Everybody. No One is Perfect.
This philosophy naturally extends beyond art, architecture, and design — because Beauty & Imperfection are prevalent throughout life, nature, humanity, reality, and society.
My point with this is that people often fall into The Quest for Perfection — analyzing everything, calculating everything, criticizing everything, defining everything, controlling, measuring, and quantifying everything — in an attempt to achieve Flawlessness — but there’s absolutely no such thing as Flawlessness or Perfection in the first place — so it becomes the futile attempt of the ego and rigid human intellect chasing its own tail, like a dog — round and round and round — but never really getting anywhere.
There’s nothing particularly wrong about doing the best you can, when it comes to doing things. You should do the best you can. It means that you care about what you’re doing and that you can handle responsibility in this world. There’s nothing wrong with diligence. But you also have to have an Acceptance, Forgiveness, & Appreciation of Imperfection.
The Quest for Perfection can cause harsh self-critical attitudes and inner feelings that disempower a person — blinding them from a broader spiritual reality and truth — as well as cause overly critical attitudes and inner feelings about others — causing adverse, harmful, or even hateful actions, comments, or judgements toward others — blinding one from the deeper spiritual awareness, perception, and understanding of benevolence and compassion — as well as blocking themselves from potential experiences, opportunities, and relationships — and it’s all just a trap of their own ego and the rigid human intellect seeking Flawlessness & Perfection.
The Quest for Perfection basically traps a person within the illusions of their own mind.
The funny thing about Perfectionism is that a person can even become trapped in seeking a harmony between Beauty & Imperfection — Wabi-Sabi — because Perfectionism refuses to accept any standard short of perfection — of which there is no such thing to begin with — and Beauty & Imperfection are relative and subjective to the eye of the beholder — so the Perfectionist never really knows what is Beautiful, Perfect, or Imperfect enough.
What’s that mean?
The mind can become trapped in circles of its own feelings, opinions, and thoughts about things — rather than reaching an Acceptance, Forgiveness, & Appreciation of Things.
The Danger of Perfectionism is that it can lead to aggression, anger, anxiety, depression, frustration, eating disorders, health issues, isolation, narcissism, neuroticism, obsession, pessimism, procrastination, inferiority complex, superiority complex, substance abuse, violence, or even suicide — many different things — none of which are any good for you.
The Secret, of course, is to Relax — Never Make Anything Too Important or Special — Never Be Too Controlling, Rigid, or Uptight About Anything — Be Agile & Flexible.
The Secret is to reach an Acceptance, Forgiveness, & Appreciation of Imperfection.
While The Philosophy of Wabi-Sabi is primarily applied to Physical Discipline — such as art, architecture, and design — you have to be able to apply The Philosophy of Wabi-Sabito all things — the Physical, Psychological, & Philosophical — because Nothing is Perfect.
Even if a Philosophy is Perfect — Human Beings Aren’t.
The harmony between Beauty & Imperfection — An Appreciation of Natural Simplicity — is easy to see physically — it’s the rustic wooden fence surrounding a Zen Garden — it’s the beautiful woman wearing blue jeans with holes in the knees — it’s the little red-headed kid with freckles on their nose — it’s the beat-up old rusty 1952 Chevy Apple Truck — it’s the air bubbles in a handcrafted blown-glass blue bowl — or a fine five-course sizzling meal served on a flat black stone. These things are Wabi-Sabi.
Psychologically — Wabi-Sabi is basically about Tolerance.
Tolerance is The Ability to Handle Contradiction — Tolerance is The Power of Endurance — Tolerance is The Ability to Withstand Things without Adverse Reaction — Tolerance is The Power of Acceptance — Tolerance is The Ability to Allow Something to Exist without Interference — regardless of whether or not you agree with it — regardless of whether or not you like it — Tolerance is Forbearance — Patience, Restraint, & Self-Control. These things grant one Inner Power, Perception, & Understanding. These things are Wabi-Sabi.
The Wisdom of Wabi-Sabi grants one A State of Transcendence — because we live in a world of contradiction and intolerance — which gives rise to conflict, opposition, & strife.
The Secret is to reach an Acceptance, Forgiveness, & Appreciation of Imperfection.
The Power of Acceptance, Forgiveness, & Appreciation can heal and transcend just about anything — including Perfectionism & Imperfection — because Perfection & Imperfection are both Relative & Subjective to The Power of Your Own Perception & Understanding.
The Beautiful Can Be Imperfect — The Imperfect Can Be Beautiful. Perfectly Imperfect.
This is to understand The Philosophy of Beautiful Imperfection — Natural Simplicity.
